Slaves … the first thing that caught my attention in this band was the voice.
I know, you’re thinking it should be the first thing, but as an amateur guitarist, there’s nothing more attractive than a good riff. The funny thing about the voice is that remembers more a pop than a metal singer, which I love that mix.
I loved the first albums of the band with the former singer John Craig, specially Beautiful Death, a MASTERPIECE that I’m are sure you are going to enjoy (available on YouTubein streaming).
To Better Days, brings fresh air, taking the leadership Matt McAndrew, maintaining the essence of the melodic voice that we like so much.
The Californian band, founded in 2014, announced before their new album that it would be the last one under the name of Slaves, not only to fight racial injustice, to close the door on the consumption of illegal substances in the past.

Heavy rhythm guitars, guitar solos with feeling, a lot of double bass drum, dark verses and melodic choruses, that’s how I define 5FDP.
Music specialists would classify them as Groove Metal. The important thing is that this band recovers the evoulution of the 90s Thrash Metal.
5FDP, American band formed in 2005. The name refers to a classic Kung Fu technique called Five Finger Death Punch. It is said that the idea was taken from films such as Kill Bill or the super chinese movie production, King Boxer.
Recently they have released their eighth album and I can tell you that it is one of my favorites of the band.
If this is your first time listening to 5FDP, I recommend you to start with their third work, American Capitalist, which I think is the best of his career.
Avenged Sevenfold gives us B-sides, and covers with “Diamonds In The Rough“.
Diamonds In The Rough is an album with covers, b-sides and alternate versions of some of their most famous songs.
The A7X frontmam explained:
“It’s very typical of musicians to write 20 to 30 songs for a particular album. Most of the time, they take the best of the bunch and call it a day, discarding the rest. We have never written like that. We don’t usually finish songs unless they are fulfilling a purpose. The one exception to this was during the self-titled era. We were experimenting with our sound, producing ourselves and we had no one to reel us in.”
Since the album came out I haven’t stopped listening to it and I can say that it is a masterpiece. I liked it a lot more than their previous work The Stage. Watch out! I don’t mean this one’s bad. Watch out! I don’t mean this one’s bad. It just reminds me of that turning point the band had from guttural to melodic voices.
And what are you going to find at Diamonds in the Rough? Apart from unpublished songs, two different versions of Almost Easy and the famous Afterlife, as well as 3 amazing covers of Flash Of The Blade (Iron Maiden), Walk (Pantera) and Paranoid (Black Sabbath).
Our second recommendation is based on the origins. A Californian band whose members, like my first band, had known each other since high school. In 1999, at just 18 years of age, Avenged Sevenfold (A7X) was born.
The beginnings of the band, especially in the first two albums, the voice was more focused on the screaming style. It was not until the fourth homonymous album, when they began to use melodic voices.
I have great admiration for this band, since the drummer passed away (friend and founder), they continued writting music without losing their identity.
As a curiosity, singer M. Shadows was the first guest vocalist on Slash’s debut solo album. This collaboration was born, after A7X performed It’s Not Easy by Guns ‘n’ Roses with him.
Finally, for all the guitarists that are reading this, tell you that the lead guitar, Synyster Gates, recently opened with his father, Brian Haner (composer and producer) a virtual academy called The Synyster Gates School. Totally free.
From the Gods releases their new work, American Sun. Powerful, fresh and very pure. Will you join me and listen to them?
Formed in 2010 in Austin (Texas). The band brings different music styles from the purest Metal, Rock, Hip Hop… to Reggae voices. As Channer explains:
“If the song calls for screaming and angry vocals I’ll do that and if it calls for something a little more melodic that’s what I do, it’s just about the emotion of the song and how I’m feeling at the moment. I like to say we wrote a rock record with a hip-hop ethos.”
Fire From the Gods have experienced their ups and downs since their debut album. However, they kept working to release their latest album American Sun, a Masterpiece for my ears and where I recommend you to start if it’s the first time you hear about them.
In 2017 they re-launched their first work under the name of Narrative Retold, including two new songs produced by Korn‘s singer Jonathan Davis.
In 2019 the band signed with the record label Eleven Seven, owned by Five Finger Death Punch‘s guitarist Zoltan Bathory.
The album American Sun, like Narrative Retold, deals with issues such as political unrest, technological overload and environmental apathy.
